Ceramic Spray Sealant vs Ceramic Coating: What's the Difference?
You're standing in the paint protection aisle at your local auto parts shop. Every second bottle has "ceramic" on the label, from $30 sprays to $400 coating kits behind the counter. The bloke at the till says they're all good. Your phone shows a different opinion on every forum you check.
Two bottles sitting next to each other can both say ceramic and do different jobs. A SiO2 spray sealant tops out around three months of real protection. A true ceramic coating runs two to three years at consumer level, and five years or more when a pro installs it. Same buzzword, different chemistry.
Ceramic Spray Sealant: How It Works
A SiO2 spray sealant is a wipe-on, buff-off or wash-off product. You spray it onto a clean panel, work it across the surface with a microfibre, and it bonds to your paint with a thin layer of silicon dioxide. Beading sharpens and gloss deepens.
Durability is the catch. The spray goes on fast and beads beautifully, but buyers who expect long-term wear get burned. The packaging might claim three months, however in a Queensland summer with bird droppings, hard water, and a UV index hitting 14, expect closer to six to eight weeks before the beading fades.
That short lifespan is by design. The product was built for speed, ease, and frequent top-ups between heavier protection. Selling it as a long-term coating is where the disappointment starts.
Ceramic Coating: How It Works
A proper ceramic coating sits in a different category. It cures into a hard, semi-permanent layer that bonds to your clear coat at a chemical level. Once it's on, it stays on for years.
Application is more demanding at the reward of 3-5+ years of protection. The paint needs decontamination, polishing, and a panel wipe before the coating goes on. Each section gets levelled inside a tight window before the product flashes. Miss a high spot, let it cure overnight, and you're wet-sanding to fix it. The pay-off is true multi-year protection.
Choosing Between the Two
A ceramic spray sealant suits you if you wash your car every few weeks and enjoy the ritual of topping up protection. It suits you if you've already got a coating installed and want a maintenance layer that keeps the beading sharp. It also suits you if you want strong UV protection without the commitment of a full prep-and-coat session.
A true ceramic coating suits you if you want paint protection measured in years instead of months. It suits you if you're confident enough to handle prep, polishing, and timed application, or you'd rather pay a pro once and forget about it. It suits you if you bought the car to keep, and the maths on a five-year coating beats reapplying a spray every couple of months.

Running Both at Once
A coated car benefits from a SiO2 spray on top of the existing coating. The spray doesn't replace the coating's protection. It adds a sacrificial layer that takes the hit from bug splatter, hard water, and tree sap before any of it touches your base coating.
The routine: install the coating once, then top up with a ceramic spray every two to three months as part of your wash. The coating handles the heavy lifting. The spray keeps the surface slick and the beading visible.
